Laying the Foundations
Welcome to the Foundations Learning Platform
The Foundations Learning Platform is the official learning environment of the Laying the Foundations project. It brings together the training materials, learning resources, assessment tools and educational activities developed throughout the project to support the implementation of the Foundation Semester in vocational education and training (VET) institutions in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
The project aims to help first-year VET students successfully transition into vocational education by strengthening their digital competences, learning-to-learn abilities, soft skills and overall readiness for learning. At the same time, it supports teachers, mentors and educational staff through capacity-building activities, practical methodologies and innovative teaching resources.
This platform is structured around two complementary learning areas: one dedicated to teachers and trainers and one dedicated to students participating in the Foundation Semester.
The resources available on this platform are provided in the project languages (English, Georgian, Romanian and Ukrainian) to support accessibility and implementation across the target countries. Use the language menu at the top of the page to switch language.

The Foundation Semester
Why a Foundation Semester?
Many students enter vocational education facing challenges related to study habits, digital competences, motivation, self-confidence and adaptation to a new learning environment. Recent international evidence, including findings from PISA assessments, has also highlighted persistent gaps in key competences and educational achievement among young learners.
The Foundation Semester was designed to provide additional support during this important transition period. Through a combination of educational, mentoring and learner-support activities, it helps students develop the skills, behaviours and confidence needed to successfully engage in vocational education and training.
The Foundation Semester places learners at the centre of the educational process and aims to promote inclusion, learner engagement, educational success and long-term personal development. Its overall objective is to help students become more confident, autonomous and successful learners while creating a stronger foundation for their future educational and professional pathways.
We invite you to explore the platform and use the resources available to support teaching, learning and the successful implementation of the Foundation Semester.
